South Africa is one of our favourite countries for a reason. The diversity it has to offer is nothing short of tremendous. From lonely beaches on the Indian and Atlantic Ocean, to hillside vineyards, to romantic villages. And then there are cities like Cape Town with a stunning mountain backdrop or beautiful landscapes like the area around the Panorama Route. Last but not least, the wildlife is probably the thing South Africa is most famous for. It’s no surprise that with all this, there will be an awful lot of very nice accommodation options. We did the research for you and these are our 14 most amazing hotels in South Africa:
About 40 minutes up the coast from Durban you’ll find the Fairmont Zimbali right on a wide stretch of beach. It is a very large and beautiful resort offering all sorts of accommodation options.
This lodge lies in a more unusual location, only 50 miles from the border of Botswana near the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Compared to most other areas of South Africa, you’ll find more plains and red looking landscapes around here.
We actually stayed at this camp in December 2016 and it was a fabulous experience. Read our review here, the staff was superb and the whole setting is just perfect. The eco-strategy they practice here is one of the best out there, as they don’t take any guns on game drives, don’t lure predators with fake animal calls and so on.
The 12 Apostels is a hotel just outside Cape Town, in a setting to die for. The hotel is part of “The Leading Hotels Of The World” and offers nice sea views from most of the rooms.
The Madikwe Game Reserve actually borders Botswana, although it’s just a four to five hour drive away from Johannesburg and Pretoria, so the landscapes are a lot greener. Molori Safari Lodge definitely belongs to the most amazing hotels in South Africa.
Leopard Hills is located in the southern area of Kruger. The little private infinity pools with a view of the water hole feature nice views due to the elevated location.
The Conrad Pezula is one of the lesser-known Conrad hotels out there. This golf resort is located on a beautiful secluded bay near Knysna, about 300 miles east of Cape Town and 150 miles west of Port Elizabeth. The suites and villas are spread across the whole golf course. You’ll find some of them right by the beach, others directly on the golf course, the ocean in the distance. The good thing: You can get off season rooms at the Conrad Pezula from US$150 a night.
Ulusaba is not far from Leopard Hills, but the views must be even more stunning from the little mountain this lodge sits atop. There is a Rock Lodge and a Safari Lodge to choose from. To get a room up high like on this picture, choose the Rock Lodge.
The Bushmans Kloof is most famous for the ancient rock paintings found close to it. With some of them being more than 10,000 years old, it sure is a special thing to witness. It has won numerous awards and features a number of great outdoor dining spots.
Umhlanga is just north of Durban and with the Oyster Box there’s a very unique resort to be found here. Located directly in front of a lighthouse, the sea views from the rooms and suites are stunning. There’s also a massive infinity pool right by the lighthouse.
Madikwe Safari Lodge is not far from Molori Safari Lodge which you saw further up. The place you see in this photo is the dining area, so be sure not to concentrate on your amazing food too much, or else you’ll be missing out on these landscapes…
If you are searching for a central hotel right in Cape Town, the One & Only will be your best bet (and probably the most expensive one, too). Once you’re inside, it’s actually far more like a resort instead of a massive concrete block that you normally find right in the city centre. The pool are is huge and stretches all the way through the resort. In addition you’ll be able to see Table Mountain from a separate infinity pool on top of the roof.
Singita Lebombo surely belongs to the most amazing hotels in South Africa just for the size and the hillside location of the villas, with unbeatable views of the river bed below. The outside terraces are a real gem as well. Singita as well as the Lion Sands (next one) are located inside the Kruger Park.
Along with Singita Lebombo, the Lion Sands Game Reserve is one of the most famous high end accommodation options. There are actually four different lodges in the reserve, but all of them are simply amazing. How about dining and / or sleeping under the stars up here?
